China’s ‘Vertical Forests’ Look Straight Out Of A Sci-Fi Movie, But They’re Meant To Combat Air Pollution
Air pollution is a massive problem in many places around the world, but few countries are affected as badly as China where airborne pollutants in many regions exceed the safe limit by a staggering 100 times. It is so bad, in fact, that according to a Green Peace report, air pollution was 30 percent worse in many Chinese cities in 2016 compared to the previous year.
To combat the high levels of pollution and smog, China is planning to build Asia\\’s first “Vertical Forest” in the Nanjing Pukou District in Nanjing.
The project, entitled the Nanjing Green Towers, will feature two multipurpose buildings designed by Italian architecture firm, Stefano Boeri Architetti. The group is responsible for creating vertical forests in Italy and Switzerland and the architects reported that the new building will take inspiration from the forest created in Milan.
The tallest Nanjing Green Tower will stand at 659 feet in height while the shorter one will be 354 feet tall.
A whopping 2,500 shrubs and plants will cover the buildings along with 1,110 trees.
The architecture firm reports that the vertical forest will help provide 25 tons of carbon dioxide absorption each year and they will produce about 60 kilograms of oxygen per day.
The project will also help regenerate local biodiversity.
The Nanjing Green Towers are expected to be completed by 2018 and the firm is already looking to expand the project into other areas of China including Shanghai, Chongqing, and Guizhou.
