We all want great looking, healthy hair, but it might be our regular hair care routine that is actually damaging our hair. So good bye slit ends and dry, brittle hair because here are seven things that you are probably doing that are damaging your hair and how to fix it fast.
Washing Your Hair Too Much– Lathering up your hair daily can strip your hair of its natural oils and shine and make your hair look and feel brittle. Even if you feel like your hair is oily and you have to shampoo every day, opt for just conditioner in the shower. You’ll have clean and soft hair but won’t strip the natural oils. Try dry shampoo every two or three days to freshen up oily or lifeless hair and only use a mild shampoo and conditioner.
Too Much Product– You might feel the need to constantly wash your hair because it’s loaded down with too much product. From hairspray, to pomades and creams, and even our beloved dry shampoo, cutting back on all products will help your hair look its best.
Tying Your Hair Too Tight in Ponytails– Your ponytail and updos could damaging your hair and scalp. To prevent breakage or bald spots, stop using thin hair ties and elastics and switch to thicker hair ties and soft fabric ties. At night, let your hair down to give your scalp a break.
Towel Drying and Combing Wet Hair– Your hair is at its most fragile when it’s wet. Instead of towel drying, use an old t-shirt to dry your hair. This trick prevents spit ends and cuts down on frizz. Detangle first with your fingers then use a wide tooth comb to finish the job.
Daily Blow Drying– If your blow dryer is a staple during your daily hair routine, try using a diffuser or nozzle to limit the damage. If you don’t have either, make sure your dryer is at least five inches away from your hair. Always give your hair a blast of cool air before using any heated styling tools.
Using Styling Tools Without Protection– Curling irons and hair straighteners can make our hair look like we should be strutting down the runway, but not protecting hair before we style is bad news. Make sure you are using a heat protectant before using the tools and not just hairspray. The alcohol in the hairspray won’t protect your hair and will dry it out more! Save the hairspray for once you are done.
Hair Color and Bleach– No one wants their roots showing, but over processing and coloring hair can permanently damage your hair. Make sure you stylist is analyzing your hair each time your color and offering products to care for your hair after each treatment.
